The Department of Physical Therapy at Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) held its departmental weekly meeting on September 10, inviting visiting faculty and students from Tokushima Bunri University and Kobe International University to join. What is usually a routine meeting was transformed into a significant platform for Taiwan–Japan academic and cultural exchange.

The Japanese delegation has been visiting CSMU since September 8, engaging in clinical observations, course auditing, and cultural activities to strengthen academic ties and friendships.

CSMU President Chien-Ning Huang expressed his delight at seeing students from Taiwan and Japan gathered together to share both professional knowledge and cultural experiences. He emphasized that the event would deepen friendships, foster mutual learning, and open new opportunities for collaboration.

Dr. Yi-Ching Chen, Chair of the Physical Therapy Department, warmly welcomed the guests, noting that September 8 marked World Physical Therapy Day, as well as the 50th anniversary of the Physical Therapy Association of Taiwan and the 40th anniversary of CSMU’s Physical Therapy Department. She stressed that physical therapy integrates science, clinical practice, and humanistic care, and reaffirmed the department’s commitment to interdisciplinary training and clinical practice, preparing students to meet challenges in healthy aging, long-term care, and sports health.

A special highlight of the event was a cultural exchange segment, where Tokushima Bunri University faculty and students led all participants, including President Huang, in performing the traditional Japanese “Awa Dance.” The lively performance not only showcased Japanese culture but also created a relaxed atmosphere that brought students and faculty closer together, leaving unforgettable memories. Students from Kobe International University also introduced their school and shared recommendations for must-buy Japanese products, even presenting them as birthday gifts to students with September birthdays.

Beyond the departmental meeting, the Japanese visitors joined clinical observations at CSMU Chung-Hsing Branch, focusing on pediatric, neurological, and orthopedic physical therapy. They also attended sessions on pediatric rehabilitation, smart rehabilitation technologies, assistive devices, neurological rehabilitation, and cardiopulmonary physical therapy on campus, as well as participating in a kinesiology class alongside CSMU students.

Assistant Professor Ying-Chin Wu, who coordinated the exchange, explained that the collaboration dates back to July, when she led five students to Tokushima Bunri University. The warm hospitality and professional guidance they received in Japan laid a strong foundation for this return visit.

Chair Chen emphasized that the exchange demonstrates the department’s active efforts to expand international collaboration, while providing opportunities for students from both countries to inspire each other through academic learning and cultural interaction. She expressed hopes for continued cooperation to advance physical therapy education and professional development.
