In alignment with its commitment to University Social Responsibility (USR) and the vision of health equity, the College of Medical Science at Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) organized two “Community Joint Health Screening Events” on June 20 and June 24. The events were co-hosted with the Taichung Municipal School for the Deaf and the Taichung Municipal School for the Blind, mobilizing approximately 65 faculty members and students to form an interprofessional health service team. Together, they showcased both strong practical capacity and deep social engagement.

The screenings brought together six departments within the College of Medical Science—Medical Laboratory Science and Biotechnology, Occupational Therapy, Physical Therapy, Optometry, Medical Imaging and Radiological Sciences, and Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology. Services included blood pressure measurement, sarcopenia screening, hand function and lower limb strength and balance tests, gait and oxygen saturation assessments, vision and color vision tests, mobile hearing screening, and preliminary speech therapy evaluations. By integrating multiple specialties, the initiative provided comprehensive health assessments for students and faculty of both schools as well as residents of the surrounding communities.

The June 20 session at the School for the Deaf received enthusiastic support from Principal Ming-Chun Tsai, with local community leader Ching-Yi Chen also in attendance. The June 24 session at the School for the Blind, jointly held with the Houli community, was strongly backed by Principal Ching-Ju Wang. Both events were personally led by College Dean Dr. Feng-Yi Yu, reinforcing strong collaborations with local institutions. Dr. Yu emphasized that health screenings not only help detect potential health risks at an early stage but also strengthen the ties between the College and local partners, serving as a vital practice at the intersection of education and public health.

Across the two sessions, the initiative served approximately 80 participants. For CSMU students, the experience provided valuable opportunities to deepen clinical practice skills and transform academic knowledge into service capacity, embodying the university’s goal of “learning by doing.”

Dean Yu further stressed that the College of Medical Science remains guided by the mission of “professional advancement and social responsibility.” Looking ahead, the College will continue to expand such collaborative models, reaching into classrooms, tailoring services to community needs, and implementing both joint and individual screening programs. By linking schools, communities, and healthcare resources, CSMU seeks to strengthen students’ practical training while extending health services into local society, advancing an inclusive and shared vision of health for all.
