Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) today (August 7) hosted the “Taiwan-Canada Clinical Innovation and Digital Health Technology Exchange,” bringing together the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, the Biotechnology Industry and Medical Promotion Association (BIO), the Biotechnology Industry Research Assistance Center (BIRAC), CSMU Hospital, and the CSMU Senior Industry Startup Accelerator. The event brought together six Canadian startups, CSMU research and startup teams, the Clinical Trial Center of CSMU Hospital, and physicians for technology exchange and business matching. Focusing on clinical digital health and smart healthcare, the event aimed to connect clinical needs with innovative technologies and deepen Taiwan-Canada collaboration in smart healthcare.
CSMU President Lin Chun-che said that, together with its affiliated hospital, the university remains committed to education, research, clinical care, and healthcare innovation while actively promoting international collaboration. He emphasized that universities should serve as important bridges connecting academia, healthcare, industry, and the international community. Through cross-border collaboration, universities can facilitate knowledge exchange and innovative applications while working together to build a smarter and more resilient healthcare system.
Li Chih-lan, Director of the Trade and Investment Division at the Canadian Trade Office in Taipei, said that Canada has strong innovation capabilities in artificial intelligence, digital health, and precision medicine. She expressed hope that the exchange with CSMU would leverage Taiwan’s high-quality clinical settings to jointly advance the implementation of innovative technologies in smart healthcare.
The exchange featured technology presentations and one-on-one business matching sessions, enabling participants to engage in in-depth discussions on clinical needs, technology validation, and potential collaboration models. CSMU and its affiliated hospital also introduced their industry-academia collaboration capabilities and clinical validation resources, while participants exchanged views on potential partnership models to accelerate the implementation and development of innovative technologies and startups.
The event showcased a range of innovative technologies, including AI-powered integration of genomic and health data to provide personalized health management services; retinal signal analysis technology to support the early diagnosis of neurological and psychiatric disorders; and a technology capable of completing cognitive function assessments within two minutes, with potential applications in early dementia screening and healthy aging management. Other technologies on display included suspended medical equipment operation systems, smart bone materials, and precision delivery systems. An innovative gene-editing platform was also presented to accelerate the development of precision medicine and new therapeutics. Together, these innovations demonstrated a broad spectrum of applications spanning health management, disease diagnosis, clinical treatment, and drug development.
Wu Hung-ming, Vice President for Industry-Academia Collaboration at CSMU, said that in recent years, the university has established a one-stop innovation model through its Senior Industry Startup Accelerator, integrating R&D, clinical validation, technology translation, startup incubation, and international partnerships. By leveraging clinical settings at CSMU Hospital and international collaboration resources, the accelerator aims to facilitate the validation and application of innovative technologies from Taiwan and abroad, further strengthening smart healthcare and health management.
