2025/09/23 Chung Shan Medical University Hosts Immersive Debate Workshop to Strengthen Medical Students’ Soft Skills

The Teaching Resources and Faculty Development Center of Chung Shan Medical University (CSMU) held the 2025 Soaring Eagle Program: Immersive Debate Skills Training on September 20–21. The program, jointly planned and executed by Nutrition Department students Joanne Wang and Jenning Chen, received grant recognition. Centered on “communication” and “critical thinking,” the two-day workshop guided students through hands-on practice in structured expression, empathetic listening, and logical debate, helping them build confidence, develop interdisciplinary collaboration skills, and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in strengthening social adaptability.

On the first day, Joseph Cheng, Chairperson of the Goodwill Communication Association, delivered the Goodwill Communication Workshop. Drawing on medical and long-term care case studies, he emphasized the importance of “empathetic listening.” The course highlighted awareness of emotions, understanding of needs, and conflict prevention to enhance teamwork and interpersonal trust. Cheng noted that goodwill communication is an essential competency in both clinical practice and everyday interactions.

The second day featured the Critical Thinking x Debate Workshop, led by Jeffrey Chang of the Taiwan Future Leadership Association. Through argumentation techniques, role-play, and group practice, students trained to enhance logic and persuasion under time pressure. With real-time feedback from the instructor, participants identified personal strengths and areas for improvement, further sharpening oral communication and quick-thinking skills.

A special session, Highlight Speeches and Idea Recording, documented outstanding student remarks, encouraging spontaneous responses and confident presentation. It also provided opportunities for teamwork in planning, coordination, and integration. The workshop was met with enthusiastic feedback, with students noting that they not only improved their public speaking but also learned to express self-value through voice.

Professor Meng-Ju Tsai, Director of the Teaching Resources and Faculty Development Center, emphasized that medical professionalism is not only about knowledge and technical skills but also about clear communication and interdisciplinary collaboration, which are crucial in modern healthcare teams. He noted that this program reflects the trend of diversified medical education and showcases CSMU’s commitment to holistic education. He expressed hope that students will apply what they learned in class, internships, and future careers, demonstrating professionalism, confidence, and influence.
